The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,802 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,802 managers reported a position, together holding 1.50bn shares, or 67.3% of the company. The 40 largest are listed.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Instrument check. All KMI register rows are denominated in KMI's single listed common class, 'Class P common stock' (NYSE: KMI). There is no partnership-unit or LLC-unit structure on the public security itself, unlike some pipeline peers; KMI converted its predecessor MLP/LP structure (KMP, EPB, KMR) into a single C-corp with one common class back in 2014-2015. No shares:null-for-instrument-mismatch case applies to any register row here.
- Equity-method joint ventures counted as holdings. KMI's FY2025 10-K (period ended 31 Dec 2025) is the only filing found with a per-investee ownership percentage and carrying value table; the Q2 2026 10-Q reports just one combined 'Investments' balance sheet line ($7,705 million at 30 Jun 2026, up from $7,532 million at 31 Dec 2025, per the segment balance sheet footnote) with no breakdown by investee. Per the brief's rule against assigning a combined balance to one investee, the 11 holdings rows here use the FY2025 year-end (31 Dec 2025) individually-stated figures rather than any estimate for the Jun 2026 total. The FY2025 10-K equity investments note total across ALL investees, named and unnamed, is $7,532 million, of which $503 million sits in an unnamed 'All others' bucket (excluded from holdings, per the brief) and a further $266 million in EagleHawk (BPX Eagle Ford Gathering LLC) at 31 Dec 2024 dropped to a dash (zero) at 31 Dec 2025, consistent with EagleHawk exiting equity-method treatment (likely consolidation or disposal) during 2025; no EagleHawk row is recorded for 2025.
- NGPL Holdings also carries a $375 million related-party promissory note receivable (6.75% quarterly interest, same balance at 31 Dec 2025 and 2024) alongside the $645 million equity investment; this is a loan, not equity, and is not added to the NGPL holding's value_usd.
- Richard Kinder is the co-founder, former Chairman and CEO (1999-2015), and current Executive Chairman: his 258,086,579-share, 11.60%-of-class stake (as of 16 Mar 2026) is the defining feature of KMI's ownership structure and by a wide margin the largest single holding on this register, institutional or insider. His position includes 40 million shares pledged against a margin loan used to buy additional KMI stock and 11.8 million shares held via a limited partnership he controls but mostly disclaims beneficial interest in (99%).
- Register reconciliation on Vanguard, BlackRock and State Street. KMI's 2026 proxy separately discloses 5%+ holders sourced from each firm's most recent Schedule 13G/A on file: Vanguard 201,371,965 shares (9.05%, per a 13G/A reflecting 30 Sep 2024 ownership, filed 12 Nov 2024), BlackRock 153,167,516 shares (6.88%, per a 13G/A reflecting 31 Dec 2023 ownership, filed 26 Jan 2024), and State Street 127,296,540 shares (5.72%, per a 13G/A reflecting 31 Dec 2023 ownership, filed 30 Jan 2024). These 13G figures are 20 months to 2.5 years stale relative to this register's Q2 2026 13F-HR figures (Vanguard 193,483,299, BlackRock 175,834,246, State Street 130,863,419 shares), so the register uses the fresher 13F data per the brief; the proxy's own 13G-sourced numbers are recorded here only as a cross-check, not used in the register.
- No Schedule 13D or fresh 13G has been filed against KMI common stock since 12 Nov 2024 (Vanguard's 13G/A), per the EDGAR SC 13 filing feed for CIK 0001506307 checked in this task, so the register otherwise leans on 13F-HR data and the proxy's insider table rather than any independent 13D/G position.
- Market cap ($73.08 billion) and share price ($32.08, previous close 14 Aug 2026) are stockanalysis.com figures. Cross-check: 2,226,802,089 shares x $32.08 implies approximately $71.4 billion, moderately below the reported $73.08 billion market cap; the difference is consistent with the aggregator using a more current share count (net of any buybacks/issuance) than the 23 Jul 2026 10-Q cover page figure used here, or index-provider rounding conventions.
- Self-gate check: summing the ten non-aggregate, non-insider institutional register rows (Vanguard, BlackRock, State Street, Bank of America, Geode, Norges Bank, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, FMR, Wells Fargo) gives 746,950,387 shares against 2,226,802,089 shares outstanding, or 33.5%. Richard Kinder's row and the officers-group aggregate are excluded from this sum per the gate instructions (Kinder rolls up into the aggregate; the aggregate is itself an aggregate). 33.5% is within the expected 25 to 45 percent range for this register.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- The identities and individual sizes of the investments inside the FY2025 10-K's $503 million 'All others' equity-investees bucket. Not named or broken out in either the FY2025 10-K or the Q2 2026 10-Q.
- Any per-investee breakdown of the $7,705 million combined equity-investments balance as of 30 Jun 2026 (the Q2 2026 10-Q date). Only the FY2025 year-end (31 Dec 2025) breakdown is disclosed with a per-investee table; searched the Q2 2026 10-Q for 'Ownership Interest' and 'Total investments' and found neither, only the combined segment balance-sheet line and the aggregate 'Earnings from equity investments' income-statement line.
- What happened to the EagleHawk (BPX Eagle Ford Gathering LLC) equity investment between 31 Dec 2024 ($266 million carrying value) and 31 Dec 2025 (shown as a dash in the FY2025 10-K table). Not explained in the windows searched; could be consolidation, disposal, or reclassification. Not recorded as a current holding given the zero 2025 balance.
- Whether Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers other than Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (e.g. Vanguard Advisers Inc, Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co, Vanguard Global Advisers) also hold KMI shares for Q2 2026. Not individually checked within the time budget; if they do, the true Vanguard aggregate is somewhat higher than the 193,483,299 shares used here.
- Franklin Resources (4,155,545 shares) and MFS (30,329 shares) were both confirmed via their own Q2 2026 13F-HR filings but fall below the top-10 cutoff used here and are not included as separate register rows, since ten institutional holders plus two insider rows already covers the brief's 8-12 target.
- Capital Research Global Investors' Q2 2026 13F-HR (CIK 0001422848, accession 0001422848-26-000094) contains no row for Kinder Morgan under CUSIP 49456B101 or the issuer name fragment 'KINDER MORGAN', so this manager (listed among the project's pre-verified CIKs) does not currently hold KMI and is omitted from the register rather than included at zero.
- KMI's own Q3 2026 10-Q was not yet filed as of 17 Aug 2026 (checked against the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0001506307), so no post-30 Jun 2026 equity-investment activity is reflected.
- A precise reconciling explanation for the roughly $1.6 billion gap between shares-outstanding x share-price ($71.4bn) and stockanalysis.com's reported $73.08bn market cap was not pinned down beyond the share-count-timing hypothesis in notes.
