The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,818 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,818 managers reported a position, together holding 1.23bn shares, or 85.7% of the company. The 40 largest are listed.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is EXCLUDED as a holding. FCX's FY2025 10-K states FCX holds a 48.76% share ownership in PTFI, with the remaining 51.24% held by PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (MIND ID, an Indonesia state-owned enterprise) and PT Indonesia Papua Metal Dan Mineral (formerly PT Indocopper Investama). Despite FCX owning less than half the economic interest, PTFI is a CONSOLIDATED operating subsidiary under FCX's control (governance and operating agreement rights), consistent with the brief's explicit warning. No holding row is recorded for PTFI.
- Cerro Verde is EXCLUDED as a holding for the same reason. FCX's economic interest in Cerro Verde rose from 53.56% to 55.08% via a February 2025 purchase of 5.3 million shares for $210 million, and the Q2 2026 10-Q references a further May 2026 purchase of 2.0 million Cerro Verde shares. Cerro Verde is a majority-owned, CONSOLIDATED operating subsidiary (Peru copper mine), not a minority stake, so it is not recorded as a holding.
- MIND ID's stake is in PTFI (the Indonesian operating subsidiary), not in FCX common stock (the NYSE-listed parent researched here). FCX's EDGAR filing history for CIK 0000831259 shows no Schedule 13D or 13G filed by MIND ID, Inalum, or any Indonesian government entity against FCX shares, and no SC 13D/13G of any kind has been filed on FCX since 12 Nov 2024 (last SC 13G, Capital Research Global Investors). Accordingly no Indonesian government or MIND ID row appears on FCX's own register.
- PT Smelting is FCX's only identified genuine minority equity holding: PTFI holds 66% of this Gresik, Indonesia smelter/refinery (joint venture with Mitsubishi Materials Corporation) but accounts for it under the EQUITY METHOD because PTFI does not control it despite majority ownership (PTFI is not the VIE primary beneficiary; MMC operates the facility). Its standalone dollar value is not broken out in FCX's filings: it sits inside a combined 'Other assets' balance sheet line ($1,717 million at 30 Jun 2026) alongside unrelated items (e.g. long-term restricted cash), so per the brief's rule against assigning a combined balance to one investee, value_usd for this holding is null. Only annual equity earnings from PT Smelting are disclosed ($6m 2025, $8m 2024, $10m 2023; $5m Q2 2026, $11m H1 2026).
- Searched the FY2025 10-K and Q2 2026 10-Q for 'Kisanfu' (zero hits in both): FCX has no disclosed interest in the Kisanfu copper-cobalt project (associated with other miners, not Freeport). No holding recorded.
- The Vanguard Group case: Vanguard Group Inc (CIK 0000102909) filed Form 13F-NT (notice, no holdings) for the quarter ended 30 Jun 2026, per the January 2026 reorganisation of Vanguard's 13F filing structure. The register uses the sum of its two successor 13F-HR filers, Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (118,022,779 shares combined), as a single substituted 'The Vanguard Group' row rather than listing Vanguard multiple times.
- Percentages for institutional register rows are computed against 1,436,017,523 common shares outstanding as of 31 Jul 2026 (Q2 2026 10-Q cover page). The three proxy-sourced insider rows use the proxy's own denominator of 1,437,530,696 shares as of 13 Apr 2026.
- Register reconciliation: FCX's 2026 proxy, citing Schedule 13G/A as of 31 Mar 2026, names only BlackRock, Inc. (89,623,089 shares, 6.2%) as a beneficial owner of more than 5%. The proxy notes Vanguard's 26 Mar 2026 Schedule 13G Amendment No. 10 disclosed an internal realignment under which Vanguard's beneficial ownership is now reported on a disaggregated basis across subsidiaries, and as filed, Vanguard reported no shares held with sole or shared voting power at the parent level as of that 13G. This register instead uses each manager's own Q2 2026 13F-HR (30 Jun 2026 position dates): BlackRock at 121,954,704 shares (8.49%) is meaningfully higher than its 31 Mar 2026 13G figure, and Vanguard's summed successor entities (118,022,779 shares, 8.22%) restore Vanguard to a visible position despite its absence from the proxy's 5%-owner table.
- Market capitalisation of $95.48 billion and the $66.49 share price are stockanalysis.com's figures as of 14 August 2026 close (previous close as of the 17 Aug 2026 lookup). Cross-check: 1,436,017,523 shares x $66.49 implies approximately $95.5 billion, consistent with the reported market cap.
- Self-gate check: summing the eleven non-aggregate, non-member (non-insider) register rows gives 599,126,166 shares against 1,436,017,523 shares outstanding, or 41.72%, within the expected 15 to 55 percent range for this register.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- The exact standalone carrying value of PTFI's investment in PT Smelting. FCX's filings disclose only annual equity-method earnings, not a balance sheet figure; it is embedded in a combined 'Other assets' total covering unrelated items. Looked in Note 2 (Summary of Significant Accounting Policies) and the Other Smelting Facilities and Mining Properties section of the FY2025 10-K, and the balance sheet and income statement of the Q2 2026 10-Q.
- Whether Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers other than Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (e.g. Vanguard Advisers Inc, Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Co, Vanguard Global Advisers) also hold FCX shares. Not checked individually within the time budget; if they do, the true Vanguard aggregate is somewhat higher than the 118,022,779 shares used here.
- Capital Group's other filing entities (Capital World Investors, Capital International Investors, SMALLCAP World Fund, etc., which the Q1 2026 FCX register groups under 'Capital Group' with CIKs 0000895213, 0001065349, 0001065350, 0001422849, 0001562230 in addition to 0001422848) were not individually checked; only Capital Research Global Investors (the pre-verified CIK) is included, so total Capital Group ownership is understated versus the Q1 2026 register's combined 44,175,947 shares.
- FCX's Q3 2026 10-Q was not yet filed as of 17 August 2026 (checked against the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0000831259), so any equity-investment activity in that quarter is not reflected.
- Holders ranked below FMR on institutional-ownership aggregators or the Q1 2026 13F register (e.g. Bank of New York Mellon, Northern Trust, Dimensional Fund Advisors, Wellington Management, Millennium Management, T. Rowe Price, Invesco, Goldman Sachs, Janus Henderson) were not individually verified against their own Q2 2026 13F-HR filings, since eleven institutional holders plus insiders already satisfy the brief's top 8 to 12 requirement.
