The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 4,186 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
4,186 managers reported a position, together holding 310.5m shares, or 70.0% of the company. The 40 largest are listed.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Costco's proxy statement (filed 2025-12-04) lists Vanguard Group, Inc. at 43,455,368 shares (9.79%) and BlackRock, Inc. at 34,781,929 shares (7.83%) as of the record date, sourced from those firms' 13F-HR filings dated Nov 7 2025 and Nov 12 2025 respectively. This research file instead uses the more recent Q1 2026 (period 2026-03-31) 13F figures for both, which are modestly higher (44,163,442 and 34,947,040 shares). Both figures are filed and correct for their respective dates; the difference is normal quarter-over-quarter position change, not a data error.
- pct_of_company for register rows is calculated against the 443,478,804 shares outstanding reported on the cover of Costco's 10-Q for the quarter ended 10 May 2026 (filed 2026-06-03), the most recent share count available.
- Costco's DIAMANT ASSET MANAGEMENT, INC. row in this project's pre-built 13F register (data/registers/COST.json) carries a value_usd equal to its share count (6,726,899 for both fields), which looks like a stale placeholder rather than a priced value. That holder was excluded from this curated register rather than propagating a suspect figure.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- Costco's most recent 10-K (fiscal year ended 31 Aug 2025) and 10-Q (quarter ended 10 May 2026) were searched for 'equity investment', 'equity securities', 'non-marketable', 'joint venture', 'unconsolidated', 'equity method', and 'minority interest' and turned up no disclosed equity stakes in other companies, public or private. Unlike Alphabet, Amazon, or Nvidia, Costco does not appear to hold strategic equity positions in other businesses; its balance sheet's investment lines are limited to government/agency securities and certificates of deposit (cash-management holdings, excluded from this file's scope per the brief). This is treated as a sourced negative finding (empty holdings array) rather than a gap, but a targeted search of Costco's international-market SEC exhibits or any non-SEC disclosure of a minority stake was not performed and could not be ruled out with full certainty in the time available.
- The 5 smaller Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers (of 9 total) and the 5 smaller Capital Group-affiliated 13F filers (of 6 total) that make up part of those two register rows' totals were taken from this project's pre-built COST.json register rather than individually re-fetched and verified against live EDGAR filings; only each family's largest filer was independently confirmed.
