The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 1,766 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
1,766 managers reported a position, together holding 320.7m shares, or 89.2% of the company. The 40 largest are listed.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- CME has one listed class of common stock, Class A (Nasdaq: CME), plus four small series of Class B common stock (B-1: 625 shares, B-2: 813 shares, B-3: 1,287 shares, B-4: 413 shares as of 30 Jun/8 Jul 2026) tied to legacy exchange trading rights on the CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX trading floors respectively. Class B shares carry the right to elect certain directors specific to their series and vote together with Class A on other matters. All register percentages and shares_outstanding in this file use only the Class A count; Class B counts are reported separately in company.share_classes and never mixed into the Class A denominator. CME's 2026 annual meeting proxy (Items 4 through 7) proposes charter amendments to eliminate the Class B-1, B-2 and B-3 shareholders' rights to elect directors, which if approved would further reduce the practical significance of the Class B series; the vote had not yet occurred as of the 23 Mar 2026 proxy filing date.
- S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC (S&P/DJI) is CME's largest and most valuable minority stake: a 27% equity-method interest carried at $1.4 billion at 31 Dec 2025, paired with a long-term exclusive license (through at least one year after CME's interest falls below 5%, accounting for dilution) to list S&P 500 and related index futures and options. This is CME's single richest holding but is not itself a share count: S&P/DJI is a joint venture LLC, not a share-issuing public company, so shares is null for it by design per the brief's rule on LLC/JV interests.
- OSTTRA, a joint venture in which CME held a 50% equity interest, was sold by CME and S&P Global in October 2025 (Q4 2025) for a $306.1 million gain per the FY2025 10-K. It is excluded from the holdings array because CME no longer holds it as of the reporting date; it appears only in this note for context on the equity-method investment history.
- None of the four equity-method holdings recorded here (S&P/DJI, GME Holdings, CFETS, FanDuel Prediction Markets) shares a combined balance with another: the FY2025 10-K discloses a separate named carrying amount for each, so each value_usd is a directly filed, individually-attributable figure, not a split of a combined total.
- CME's FY2025 10-K also discloses non-equity-method 'financial investments' including trading securities and available-for-sale debt securities, and states the company maintains 'equity investments in privately-held entities' as an accounting category, but does not name any additional investee beyond the four recorded here; no further holding rows are added for that category per the rule against inventing figures.
- Register reconciliation on Vanguard and BlackRock. CME's 2026 proxy states The Vanguard Group held 36,248,559 Class A shares (10.0% of vote) per a Schedule 13G/A filed 5 Mar 2026, and BlackRock, Inc. held 28,863,305 Class A shares (8.0% of vote) per a Schedule 13G/A filed 8 Nov 2024 (the most recent BlackRock 13G/A visible in the CME-CIK EDGAR filing index as separately checked). The register instead uses each manager's Q2 2026 Form 13F-HR (30 June 2026 position dates): Vanguard's successor entities sum to 32,829,380 shares and BlackRock reports 30,566,342 shares, both somewhat higher than the stale 13G figures, consistent with position changes and/or the 13F counting additional discretionary accounts beyond the 13G's beneficial-ownership scope.
- Percentages for the ten institutional 13F rows are computed against 359,576,125 Class A shares outstanding as of 8 July 2026 (Q2 2026 10-Q cover page). The two proxy-sourced insider rows instead use the proxy's own denominator of 362,804,943 Class A shares as of 16 March 2026, per each source's own reporting date.
- No Schedule 13D has ever been filed on CME Group common stock per the EDGAR filing index for CIK 0001156375, and no Schedule 13G/A newer than 8 Nov 2024 appears in that same CIK-indexed filing list (checked via EDGAR browse-edgar for CIK 0001156375, type SC 13). The proxy statement's own cited 5 Mar 2026 Vanguard 13G/A could not be independently located in that index within the time budget; the register therefore leans on Q2 2026 13F-HR data as instructed, with the proxy's summary used only for reconciliation in this note.
- Market capitalisation of $97.01 billion and the $269.80 share price are stockanalysis.com's figures as of the 14 Aug 2026 close. Cross-check: 359,576,125 Class A shares x $269.80 implies approximately $97.02 billion, consistent with the reported market cap.
- Self-gate check: summing the ten non-aggregate, non-insider register rows (Vanguard, BlackRock, State Street, Morgan Stanley, Geode, JPMorgan, Norges Bank, Bank of America, FMR, Capital Research Global Investors) gives 114,666,402 shares against 359,576,125 Class A shares outstanding, or 31.9%, within the expected 15 to 55 percent range for this register.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- The exact split of GME Holdings' current share count held by CME (only the 33% interest and a $11.8 million carrying amount are disclosed; the underlying total GME Holdings share count and CME's specific share count are not stated in the 10-K).
- Whether Vanguard-affiliated 13F filers other than Vanguard Capital Management LLC and Vanguard Portfolio Management LLC (several additional Vanguard-linked CIKs appear in this project's Q1-2026 CME 13F register, e.g. CIKs 0000933478, 0000947529, 0001550100, 0001680208, 0001767306, 0001811242, 0001984256) also hold CME shares for Q2 2026. Not individually re-checked within the time budget; if they do, the true Vanguard aggregate is somewhat higher than the 32,829,380 shares used here.
- CME's Q3 2026 10-Q was not yet filed as of 17 August 2026 (based on the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0001156375 read on this date), so any equity-investment activity in that quarter, or any update to the S&P/DJI, GME Holdings, CFETS or FanDuel Prediction Markets carrying amounts and ownership percentages since 31 December 2025, is not reflected.
- The specific reason FanDuel Prediction Markets Holdings LLC is accounted for under the equity method despite CME's 51% (majority) equity interest, rather than being consolidated; the FY2025 10-K states the accounting treatment but does not explain the governance or voting-control provisions that keep it off consolidation.
- The CME-CIK-indexed EDGAR SC 13 filing list did not surface the 5 March 2026 Vanguard Schedule 13G/A referenced by CME's own 2026 proxy statement; a direct link to that specific filing was not located within the time budget.
- Holders ranked below Capital Research Global Investors on institutional-ownership aggregators (e.g. Northern Trust, Price T Rowe Associates, Sanders Capital, Ameriprise, Franklin Resources, Goldman Sachs, Alphabet, FIL Ltd, Royal Bank of Canada, all visible in this project's Q1-2026 CME 13F register) were not individually re-verified against their own Q2 2026 13F-HR filings, since the ten institutional holders already sourced satisfy the brief's top 8 to 12 requirement.
