The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 2,926 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
2,926 managers reported a position, together holding 4.59bn shares, or 67.0% of the company. The 40 largest are listed.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- DIRECTV: AT&T completed the sale of its remaining interest in DIRECTV Entertainment Holdings, LLC to TPG Capital on 2 July 2025 (FY2025 10-K, 'Overview' and equity-affiliates footnote; also referenced in the Q2 2026 10-Q). No DIRECTV holding remains as of the FY2025 10-K (period ended 31 Dec 2025) or the Q2 2026 10-Q (period ended 30 Jun 2026), so no row is recorded in holdings. AT&T recorded a note receivable of approximately $3,600 million on closing, of which $3,100 million had been received by year-end 2025; this is a receivable, not an equity stake, and is excluded from holdings.
- Warner Bros. Discovery / WarnerMedia: neither 'Warner Bros', 'WarnerMedia', 'Discovery Inc' nor 'WBD' appears anywhere in the full text of the FY2025 10-K or the Q2 2026 10-Q (both searched in full). The FY2025 10-K's equity-affiliates footnote explicitly names only DriveNets and Gigapower as AT&T's equity-method investments at 31 Dec 2025, and separately discloses that DIRECTV was sold in July 2025, Vrio was sold in November 2021, and SKY Mexico was sold in June 2024. Taken together this indicates AT&T holds no remaining WBD stake, but the two filings checked here post-date AT&T's original WarnerMedia/WBD split-off (2022) and any further WBD share disposals, so this finding rests on absence of mention rather than an explicit 'we hold zero WBD shares' statement.
- AT&T's balance sheet carries a single combined line 'Investments in and Advances to Equity Affiliates': $1,106 million at 31 December 2025 (FY2025 10-K) and $1,130 million at 30 June 2026 (Q2 2026 10-Q). The FY2025 10-K footnote states this 'primarily included our interests in DriveNets and Gigapower' but gives no per-investee split, so both DriveNets and Gigapower are recorded in holdings with shares/value null per the brief's rule against distributing a combined bucket across its members.
- Vanguard's most recent Form 13F is a 13F-NT (notice) covering Q2 2026, meaning its AT&T position for that quarter is reported through other Vanguard-affiliated filers rather than under CIK 0000102909 itself. The register instead uses Vanguard's last Form 13F-HR, for the quarter ended 31 December 2025.
- Proxy disagreement, recorded rather than resolved. AT&T's 23 March 2026 DEF 14A reports BlackRock, Inc. at 533,538,337 shares (7.5%) sourced to a Schedule 13G/A filed 26 January 2024, and The Vanguard Group at 622,382,246 shares (8.7%) sourced to a Schedule 13G/A filed 13 February 2024. Both are more than two years stale relative to the register's 13F-based figures (BlackRock 559,396,053 shares as of 30 June 2026; Vanguard 664,055,700 shares as of 31 December 2025), so the 13F figures are used in the register.
- Percentages for the 13F register rows use 6,852,385,650 shares outstanding as of 16 July 2026, the cover-page figure on AT&T's most recent Form 10-Q (period ended 30 June 2026, filed 22 July 2026). The two insider rows use 7,000,577,201 shares outstanding as of 28 January 2026, the cover-page figure on the FY2025 Form 10-K, because the proxy's ownership table is dated 31 December 2025.
- AT&T has a single class of common stock (ticker T); the other listed tickers (TBB, T-PA, T-PC) are preferred securities, not common share classes, and are excluded from this research.
- The 12 institutional rows sum to approximately 33.3% of shares outstanding (2,282,447,283 of 6,852,385,650 shares), which is a reasonable top-12 coverage level for a widely held, dividend-focused stock like AT&T; the remainder is spread across smaller institutions and a large retail shareholder base that this research did not attempt to size.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- No individual share count or dollar value could be sourced for AT&T's DriveNets (16.6%) or Gigapower (50%) equity interests. Only the combined 'Investments in and Advances to Equity Affiliates' balance sheet line is disclosed ($1,106 million at 31 Dec 2025, $1,130 million at 30 Jun 2026). Searched the FY2025 10-K and Q2 2026 10-Q in full for a per-investee breakout; none exists in either filing.
- Whether AT&T retains any residual Warner Bros. Discovery position from the 2022 WarnerMedia separation could not be independently confirmed with a filing that states a current position of zero. Absence of any WBD/Warner Bros/WarnerMedia mention in the two most recent 10-K/10-Q filings is the basis for treating this as no remaining holding; a Schedule 13D/G or earlier 10-K covering AT&T's final WBD share disposal was not located within the time budget.
- AT&T's Q3 2026 Form 10-Q (period ending on or about 30 September 2026) was not yet filed as of 17 August 2026 per the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0000732717, so any equity-affiliate activity in that quarter is not captured here.
- No dollar value could be sourced for the two insider register rows (John T. Stankey and the officers/directors group); the proxy's beneficial ownership table reports share counts only, with no per-share value or aggregate dollar figure.
- A precise retail/free-float share count or percentage was not sourced. The FY2025 10-K states the aggregate market value of common and non-voting stock held by non-affiliates was approximately $207 billion as of a mid-2025 measurement date, but this is a value, not a share count, and was not used to construct a retail_float row given the risk of double-counting against the institutional 13F rows.
- No Schedule 13D or 13G filings on AT&T common stock more recent than those cited in the March 2026 proxy (dated January and February 2024) were checked directly on EDGAR; the register relies on Form 13F-HR filings instead, which is consistent with the brief's guidance to prefer 13F for listed institutional holders.
