The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 2,897 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
2,897 managers reported a position, together holding 625.6m shares, or 78.8% of the company. The 40 largest are listed.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- Applied Materials has no single-class founder or dual-class control block. Common stock is a single class, and no director or officer approaches a meaningful voting stake: the CEO holds about 0.18 percent and all 15 current directors and executive officers together hold about 0.30 percent of shares outstanding, per the 2026 proxy statement (as of 31 December 2025).
- Applied Materials does not file Form 13F. Its EDGAR filing history (submissions JSON for CIK 0000006951, checked 17 August 2026) contains no 13F-HR or 13F-NT of any vintage, consistent with it not acting as an institutional investment manager on others' behalf.
- Applied Materials' fiscal year ends in late October. The most recent 10-Q on file as of 17 August 2026 covers the quarter ended 26 April 2026 (filed 21 May 2026); the Q3 FY2026 10-Q, which would cover the quarter ending on or about 26 July 2026, had not yet been filed as of the research date (checked against the EDGAR submissions feed).
- Vanguard filed Form 13F-NT (notice, no holdings) for the quarters ended 31 March 2026 and 30 June 2026 under CIK 0000102909, meaning its Applied Materials position for those quarters is reported by other Vanguard reporting entities not identified here. The register therefore uses Vanguard's last full 13F-HR, for the quarter ended 31 December 2025, which is one to two quarters staler than the other institutional rows.
- The 2026 proxy statement's 'Principal Shareholders' table cites BlackRock at 76,811,130 shares (9.69%) and Vanguard at 74,116,511 shares (9.35%), but both figures are sourced to Schedule 13G/A amendments filed in February 2024 reporting December 2023 data, roughly two years stale. The register instead uses each manager's own Form 13F-HR for the most recent quarter available, which is fresher and produces different (higher) share counts for both.
- Applied Materials' Q2 FY2026 10-Q (period ended 26 April 2026) discloses, at fair value: 'Publicly traded equity securities' of $2,248 million and 'Equity investments in privately held companies' of $379 million (cost basis $348 million), both up from $2,110 million and $370 million respectively at fiscal year end 2025 (26 October 2025) and sharply up from $723 million and $291 million at fiscal year end 2024. Neither balance is broken out by counterparty in the 10-Q or FY2025 10-K. The Besi stake (announced April 2025, mid-way through FY2025) is very likely the largest driver of the jump in the publicly traded equity line, but the filing does not name Besi or any other issuer, so this combined balance is not used to size the Besi holding; the Besi figures in this file are modelled separately from Besi's own reported share count and market price (see holdings[0].method_note).
- Applied Ventures, LLC is Applied Materials' venture capital arm (confirmed in the FY2025 10-K, in the biography of Omkaram Nalamasu, its President). Its portfolio of privately held companies sits inside the combined 'Equity investments in privately held companies' balance ($379 million fair value as of 26 April 2026). No individual Applied Ventures portfolio company is named or sized in any filing checked, so no private holdings are listed.
- AMAT's 10-Q and 10-K text was searched for 'equity method', 'non-marketable', 'measurement alternative', 'Besi', 'BE Semiconductor' and 'Applied Ventures'. 'Equity method' returns no hits; Applied's equity investments (both publicly traded and privately held) are accounted for at fair value or under the measurement alternative, not the equity method, so no equity-method investee is disclosed.
- 13F share values imply different per-share prices across managers for the same 30 June 2026 quarter-end: BlackRock, State Street, Morgan Stanley and FMR all imply approximately $723.06 per share, while JPMorgan's total implies approximately $694.64 per share. This is reported as filed; the source XML info tables were read directly and not adjusted.
- Market capitalisation of $402.68 billion (stockanalysis.com, 14 August 2026) is a rounded aggregator figure, not filed. Cross-check: 793,959,430 shares outstanding at that date's closing price of $507.18 implies approximately $402.7 billion, which is consistent.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- The exact number of Besi shares Applied Materials holds. Applied's own 8-K press release (14 April 2025) states only a 9 percent stake; no subsequent Applied Materials filing (10-Q, 10-K, 8-K) names Besi or gives a share count. Checked the AFM (Dutch regulator) substantial holdings register (afm.nl) for an independent cross-check notification, but could not retrieve a specific Applied Materials/Besi entry with an exact share count and date within the time budget; the shares/value in holdings[0] are modelled from Besi's current outstanding share count and share price instead.
- Whether Applied Materials' Besi stake has changed (via sale, dilution, or Besi buybacks) since the 14 April 2025 announcement. Checked Applied's Q1 FY2026, Q2 FY2026 and Q3 FY2026 earnings press releases (8-K exhibits) for any update; none mention Besi.
- The composition of the combined 'Publicly traded equity securities' ($2,248 million fair value, 26 Apr 2026 10-Q) and 'Equity investments in privately held companies' ($379 million fair value, same date) balances beyond Besi. Neither the 10-Q nor the FY2025 10-K breaks these out by counterparty, so no other named holding (including any specific Applied Ventures portfolio company) could be sourced or sized.
- Applied Materials' Q3 FY2026 10-Q (covering the quarter ending on or about 26 July 2026) was not yet filed as of 17 August 2026 (checked the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0000006951), so any equity-position activity in that quarter is not visible here.
- Register coverage beyond the top 7 institutional holders and the insider rows: Invesco, T. Rowe Price, Capital Research/Capital Group, Norges Bank and other large holders were not individually checked within the time budget; the brief's target of 8 to 12 holders is met (7 institutional plus 2 insider rows) but the list is not exhaustive of all managers above 1 percent.
