The full register, from 13F filings
The Register tab above is hand research: a dozen holders, each traced to the filing it came from. This asks the same question of the whole market for the quarter ended 31-mar-2026, where 2,136 managers reported a position. Broad where the research is deep, and shallow in the ways a 13F always is.
2,136 managers reported a position, together holding 384.4m shares, or 74.5% of the company. The 40 largest are listed.
Built from 13F filings, which report US listed, long, US custodied positions only. A register from this source is a floor rather than a level: a holder's true position can be far larger, as BlackRock's ASML stake shows at 1.28m shares in a 13F against 26.3m in its 13G/A. Holdings held through derivatives, outside US custody, or below a manager's reporting obligation do not appear. Where a holder is marked as a family, its total sums several separate filing entities and describes something no single filing describes; the constituent entities and their share counts are listed so the total can be checked. That roll-up can legitimately exceed the family's own Schedule 13G, because a 13G is filed by one legal entity: Vanguard reports Alphabet through ten advisory entities, and The Vanguard Group Inc itself reported zero after its January 2026 disaggregation.
What a reader needs to know to read these numbers
- 3M does not file Form 13F under CIK 0000066740. The EDGAR submissions JSON for this CIK (checked 17 Aug 2026) lists no 13F-HR or 13F-NT of any vintage among its form types, consistent with 3M being an operating company rather than an institutional investment manager.
- 3M spun off its former health care business as Solventum Corporation (SOLV) on 1 April 2024, distributing 80.1% of Solventum's outstanding shares to 3M shareholders and retaining the rest (initially 174,241,976 shares per 3M's Form 3 filed as a Solventum insider on 13 Mar 2024, reduced through subsequent sales). 3M has continued to dispose of the retained stake over time via open-market and other sales reported on Form 4 (172,709,505 shares after a 26 Mar 2024 sale, 34,369,190 after an April 2024 sale, 25,569,190 after an 8,800,000-share sale on 15 Aug 2025). As of the most recent available filings (17 Aug 2026), 3M has NOT fully disposed of the stake: its Q2 2026 10-Q (period ended 30 Jun 2026, filed 21 Jul 2026) still carries 'Solventum common stock' as a $1,973 million Level 1 fair-value asset on the balance sheet and discusses ongoing mark-to-market gains/losses on '3M's retained ownership interest in common stock of Solventum Corporation.' No Form 4 sale more recent than 15 Aug 2025 was found in SEC ownership records for 3M as a Solventum insider, so the residual stake is sized in this file at the last disclosed share count (25,569,190 shares, 14.75% of Solventum as filed), cross-checked for plausibility against the fair-value trend (see the holding's method_note).
- 3M retains no voting power over the Solventum shares it still holds: under the Stockholder and Registration Rights Agreement between 3M and Solventum (dated 31 Mar 2024), 3M granted Solventum a proxy to vote 3M's retained Solventum shares in proportion to the votes cast by Solventum's other stockholders, per 3M's Schedule 13G/A.
- The Q2 2026 10-Q also discloses a small, unnamed equity-method investment position: 'Income from unconsolidated subsidiaries, net of taxes' of $1 million for the quarter and $3 million for the six months ended 30 Jun 2026 (down from $47 million and $49 million in the comparable 2025 periods after 3M sold its interest in one such investment in Q2 2025). No investee name, ownership percentage, or balance-sheet carrying value is disclosed in this filing, so per the brief this position is not sized as a separate holding; the disclosed income figures are recorded here instead as the sourced finding.
- No other equity investment, strategic stake, or minority position (e.g. venture, non-marketable securities) was found in the Q2 2026 10-Q. Searched terms: 'equity method', 'non-marketable', 'measurement alternative', 'unconsolidated', 'strategic investment', 'unrealized gain' (the only material 'unrealized gain' hits relate to the Solventum stake itself, already captured above).
- 3M's benefit/savings plans (the '3M Voluntary Investment Plan and Employee Stock Ownership Plan' and the '3M Savings Plan') are described in the 2026 proxy as holding shares in individual participant accounts, with participants (not a pooled trust) treated as the beneficial owners and a third-party trustee as shareholder of record; the proxy does not disclose a separate, aggregate share count or percentage for the plan trust as a single 5%-or-more holder, and it does not appear as a named holder in the proxy's 'beneficial owners of more than 5 percent' table. The FY2025 10-K describes 3M's 401(k)/savings plans as cash-matched with contributions invested per employee election across a menu of funds, not as a single company-stock ESOP fund with a disclosed block position. No sourceable esop_trust register row could therefore be built; see unknowns.
- The proxy's own 'Security ownership of certain beneficial owners' table (5%-or-more holders, based on share counts 'as of February 27, 2026' but sourced to each holder's own prior Schedule 13G/13G-A filings) lists: Vanguard 49,080,209 shares (8.89%), BlackRock 41,867,008 shares (7.60%), JPMorgan Chase & Co. 40,578,820 shares (7.60%), State Street Corporation 27,686,302 shares (5.10%). These are close to, but not identical with, the more current Form 13F-HR figures used in the register above (Vanguard's 13F is for 31 Dec 2025, the others for 30 Jun 2026); per the brief's preference for primary, more recent data, the register uses each manager's own 13F-HR figures rather than the proxy's table.
- JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s 13F position (39,432,727 shares, 7.65%) is unusually large for what is often assumed to be a purely 'active' manager; it reflects JPMorgan's asset-management arm's aggregate discretionary and non-discretionary holdings across many accounts, not a concentrated strategic stake, and is reported here at holder_type 'active' consistent with the brief's example filer list.
- Market capitalisation of $94.20 billion is the figure published by stockanalysis.com as of 14 Aug 2026 (close price $182.65). Cross-check: 515,722,417 shares x $182.65 implies approximately $94.197 billion, consistent.
- No sovereign wealth fund or activist (Schedule 13D) position was found. 3M's EDGAR form-type list (checked 17 Aug 2026) contains only Schedule 13G/13G-A filings among beneficial-ownership schedules, no Schedule 13D, indicating no disclosed activist stake above 5% within the time budget. Sovereign funds typically hold 3M through index mandates and, like most non-US institutions, do not file Form 13F, so no primary share count is available for any sovereign holder by that route.
- Insider rows overlap. 'All Directors, Director Nominees and Executive Officers as a Group (21 persons)' (978,105 total stock-based holdings) contains the individually listed insiders (Brown, Maheshwari, Rhodes) above and must not be summed with them; it is marked as an aggregate with residual_label for members not individually named. The three named individuals sum to 325,927, which is less than the group's 978,105.
Looked for, not found
Recorded rather than filled in. Each of these is a place where a number could have been invented and was not.
- The exact number of Solventum shares 3M currently holds as of the most recent 10-Q date (30 Jun 2026). No Form 4, Schedule 13G/A, or 10-Q since the 15 Aug 2025 Form 4 discloses an updated share count; the 25,569,190-share figure used here is the last SEC-filed number, cross-checked only indirectly against the fair-value trend in 3M's balance sheet. Checked: 3M's own EDGAR filing list, the SEC ownership-report page for 3M as a Solventum insider (own-disp?action=getowner&CIK=0000066740), and 3M's Q2 2026 and FY2025 10-Q/10-K text.
- Whether any specific, named company sits inside 3M's small 'income from unconsolidated subsidiaries' equity-method line ($1 million for Q2 2026, $3 million six months). Searched the Q2 2026 10-Q's income-statement notes; no investee name, ownership percentage, or balance-sheet value is disclosed.
- Whether 3M's Voluntary Investment Plan and Employee Stock Ownership Plan / Savings Plan trust holds a disclosable aggregate block of 3M shares as a single beneficial owner. Searched the 2026 proxy's 5%-owner table and 'Plan Accounts' voting-mechanics section, and the FY2025 10-K's employee benefit-plan note (401(k), defined contribution); none discloses a pooled trust share count, only that participants direct votes on shares allocated to their individual accounts. Per the brief, holder_type esop_trust was reserved for this row and would have been used if a number had been found.
- 3M's Q3 2026 10-Q (period ending on or about 30 Sep 2026) was not yet filed as of 17 Aug 2026 per the EDGAR submissions feed for CIK 0000066740, so any Solventum sale or new equity position taken in that quarter is not yet reflected.
- No sovereign wealth fund share count could be sourced for the reasons noted above (no 13F filed by most sovereign funds, no Schedule 13D on 3M).
- Individually-named director share counts (beyond the CEO, CFO and General Counsel pulled here) were not extracted for every director; the proxy table lists 10 non-employee directors individually with small holdings (each well under 20,000 shares/RSUs/deferred stock), none of which were pulled as separate register rows within the time budget.
